So yesterday I was actually feeling better, albeit still sickies, and I was like, AWESOME I'M CURED.

My family had their haunted house and we succeeded in making at least four kids cry, one kid traumatised for life, and several go mute in fear.

Maxwell, age 2. A fluffy black cat... one of his parents allegedly was a Maine Coon, but he's pretty normal-sized. And fluffy. Did I mention fluffy?

Had my camera's battery charger not been lost you would all be faced with yet another barrage of cat pictures by me.

i feel myself starting to soften on Avatar, since, while still boring and fraught with unfortunate racial stuff, it had a lot of stuff i like such as an alien moon, warpaint, inexplicably floating rocks, and cat people like i said last time, but it's hard when i read quotes like this from James Cameron:

"We looked at designs for the Na'vi that initially were much more alien. When we would draw Neytiri and she had fins on her back and gills and all kinds of weird protuberances and so on in odd places, the question was, well, would you want to do her? No? OK, let's back off from that. ... We just didn't want to take it so far that she had kind of a fish mouth or anything."

i realize the irony of me saying Neytiri was hot in my last Avatar post, but all the same! XD

after this i foresee one more post relating to Avatar and then i promise i'll be done. :)

This year, thanks to Terry, I'm now able to chronicle the retardism that is my family at Crimmas.

So yesterday I was so burnt out that I went home early and slept through most of the day. Lol, what.

And then Christmas came in a flood of mostly happiness and some drama involving eggnog. Again, what.

Everyone spent more money on me than I spent on them. *angst* Especially Terry. He got me a digital camera and I fucking got him a blanket. *more angst*

I got the_flowergirl's card a couple of days ago, and angelchan_2004's card yesterday (<3333 the picture kslghsdkh). I have been carded. And suddenly yesterday I remembered that I, too, was supposed to send cards this year. Oh, fuck.

Now I'm awake and still burnt out. Pictures of Christmas later (aahaha, expect many pictures now).

a Blood Syndicate picture i did for the upcoming Milestone Forever!

saw Avatar. i was expecting all the "mighty whitey" stuff and the disregard for American Indian and First Nations people, but i didn't expect it to be so damn boring, haha. i've never been a James Cameron fan, i think the only movie i like of his is the first Terminator (although T2 is supremely watchable even if it's really dumb). i haven't seen Piranha 2 or Titanic, but i've seen enough of his stuff to know that even when i don't like the movie it at the very least has really entertaining action and thrills, but Avatar was pretty blah across the board, i was really surprised by that. we're supposed to do a podcast about it next week so i'll wait for that to say more i guess, but overall the movie was pretty bad, unintentionally racist, full of "noble savage" stuff, the monsters were dull earth animal analogues (ooh, alien horse!) on a pretty generic jungle planet, and what was up with the "mystical" subtitle font? fucking Papyrus or whatever? wtf. Neytiri was cool, though, i think if they ditched everything else and ditched the thinly-veiled (or non-veiled), romanticized Native American parallels i might like a Neytiri Show. i guess i have a soft spot for cat people, blue people, and blue cat people (anyone remember her: one, two. Cameron ripped me off! ha) but that couldn't save this mess.

this one isn't about Avatar specifically, it was written a year ago, but the writer articulately talks about a lot of the problems with the sort of movie Avatar is and the problems you run into when you use aliens and monsters to explore race.

A Scottish cartoon, since I am back home for the holidays.

I'm well acquainted with the tune "Lord Lovat's Lament," since you hear it around these parts every time anyone has to pick up a fiddle and learn something. But you know, it's one of those tunes you know so well, you pay no attention to it, it's just there in the back of your head.

Then one day, I was looking up a bunch of works by Hogarth (the best) and came upon this portrait of 'Lord Lovat'. The lovely old tune and that devily face, they didn't match. So I wanted to learn more about him!

Lovat (Simon Fraser, born 1697 - there are about a million Simon Fraser Lord Lovats) really epitomizes how reading Scottish history can make you want to tear your eyeballs out, or laugh because it's nearly a farce it's so nutty. Either the people involved are disastrously loyal, or disastrously duplicitous. Everything is a disaster, but it's a hell of a ride.
